Airbnb is a common alternative to hotels, but here are some Airbnb selection tips:

  • Try to pick ones near the clinic area (Gangnam Station, Yeoksam Station, Non-hyeon Station, Sinsa Station). Picking places around here will generally put you in 8 to 15 commute from most clinics located in the Gangnam area (depends on traffic)
  • Try to pick places that have an elevator or are only 2 or 3 floors max stair walk if there is no elevator.
  • If you stay in a hotel or airbnb make sure you prepare it for your recovery.
    • Move things that you might trip on, cover up sharp corners, buy plastic covers if you think you may leak from your wound site, make sure you get plenty of pillows, so you can sleep on a 45 degree angle.

You could also try a homestay with a Korean family, and let them know if you are coming for surgery.

Note of Caution About Hosts

Be cautious when telling a host you are coming for surgery. Although we'd like to believe in the kindness of strangers, if they suddenly become invested in your surgery details and volunteering their time to assist you, then they may actually be brokering your surgery without your knowledge.

You should not disclose the names of the clinic you plan to visit until you have confirmed your final prices face to face, and have decided upon which clinic will do the surgery. If they ask clinic details before that time, then give them a random clinic name that you don't actually plan to visit. You can tell them the real clinic name after everything has been confirmed and decided upon,  since it may be relevant for them to know for emergency contact purposes after your surgery.

Some red flags that a host may be acting as a covert broker is if they start volunteering services that are essentially done by medical tour agencies such as planing and arranging your clinic schedule, soliciting clinic recommendations, handling your personal information with clinics, escorting you to the clinic and interpreting for you. If you want all these things then you should just simply work with an actual medical tour agency from the get go, since they'll be upfront about these services and what their role and responsibilities are.

I agree with the comment above, airbnb is your best choice. However, if you  do not enough money for accommodation, I would also suggest looking into a hostel that provides a private room and bath, I know two, one in Gangnam station another in Yeoksam station, names Pineville, the one in Yeoksam is for females only. They are clean and safe, I found the pineville one via airbnb but I choose to contact the owner directly as its like 100 dollars cheaper for a month stay.

For hostels, I do advice bringing your own pillow and bedsheet, and lots of trash bags.

If you want to splurge, then Hotels is not a bad thing.Try using an app like MOMONDO or KAYAK to get the best cheapest deals.

Korea makes you pay for trash bags, even at the store, so carrying a bunch will help you throw out stuff from your small room. Bringing a sturdy one will aid while shopping for food.

If you don't mind commuting for 20-30 mins, I've found great hotel options in Insadong area with reasonable prices (50-55 USD per night). I personally prefer hotels for a long stay because of the daily cleaning. I think I'll need it. It's the same subway line (line 3 - orange) so it's a straight way to my clinic, no subway or station change which is nice. Consider TOP hotel, Kuretakeso, Ibis,... They all looks great with a way better price compared to in Gangnam area. I stayed in Gangnam area during my time for consultation. It was quite pricey for a hotel of the same quality.

Edit: Line 3 is for Apgujeong / Sinsa area. The total for my stay was less than USD 600 for 12 nights. Similar private property on Airbnb after fees and taxes are either same or higher. I did not look into hostel so the price point is for hotels/private room or Entire place on Airbnb.

Yeah could you dm me the owner info? I already booked a room in pineville on airbnb but I can cancel and book directly through him instead if it's cheaper. Is it Sangsu or someone else?

I am also going in December-January!

Hi gmcnm,

I'm interested with the hotel you mentioned. What's the name of hotel? How did you book it? Thanks
