Finally decided on my rhinoplasty clinic + surgeon- my experience so far

Recommended Posts

Hi good people of PF. Been lurking around this forum without ever making an account since about more than a year ago. Had my primary rhinoplasty done the first week of december last year (dec 2017) and I wouldn't say that it was a botched job since the scars healed well, my nose wasn't crooked or anything... nostrils were even etc. HOWEVER I really hated my new nose and the surgeon totally ruined my proportions (the radix was too high, tip was droopy...) The aftercare was really not up to expectations as well and it was a very disappointing experience overall as what I had wanted improved was not addressed and I had actually preferred my pre-surgery nose- will share more on this later in another post if anyone is interested in knowing about my experience at said clinic (VIEW).
Moreover I was at one of the lowest points in my life when I had decided on getting the primary surgery (ANOTHER TIP: Please make sure you're mentally very strong when you decide to undergo any kind of surgery as the whole experience is EXTREMELY emotionally taxing and really does affect your mental state. Even if everything goes well, RECOVERY TAKES TIME (at least a month for major swelling and up to 6 months to a year for minor swelling).

So anyway I decided to finally make a thread on here so I can interact more with you guys as well as share my own experiences. When I first started this journey I really didn't know that there would be so many things to consider. Also bear in mind that it doesn't mean that if one method doesn't work well for one person that it won't for another since everyone's bodies react differently. I like to think that it's a combination of luck (not very comforting I know but true), the surgeon's skills (and also one that has the same aesthetic as you) and various other factors. So as long as the surgeon is adequately qualified I think that it is more up to finding one that is a good fit rather than the 'best' surgeon as there is no such thing imo. That being said even finding a good surgeon is no easy task and I really hope that I've made the right choice this time because I've finally put down the deposit for my rhinoplasty revision on monday (wish me luck!!) with NAMU plastic surgery clinic and the surgery will be done by Dr Joung. Oh yes before I go any further would just like to make a disclaimer that I've been lurking around long enough to know that there are many suspicious posts on the forum and that has made us forummers very wary of sponsored posts, myself included. NONE of my opinions or statements on this forum are dishonest and I have NOT been offered any kind of incentive in any way. Everything stated here will only be comprised of my OWN OPINION and I will not hesitate to state anything I don't like or that I think can be improved on as well

Prior to this trip I had already consulted with several other clinics during a previous trip for leisure and I will be sharing my experiences with each clinic briefly although you can feel free to PM me should you want more information and I'll try my best to answer if I can!

Clinics I consulted with online ONLY:
O&YOUNG- Not very responsive so I gave up
BRAUN and TOP CLASS - same consultant (Olivia- very very prompt with her replies polite and helpful. She is the online english consultant for many clinics but somehow I decided against or had no time to go to these two clinics. Also Braun charges a fee for the scan and the fees quoted were on the high side)
CHUNGDAM U - slow replies so i didn't get to fix an appointment with them in the end. Also read posts about them that made them seem money minded and had bad aftercare for foreigners but I know that they have done the noses of several famous Ulzzang's like Kwon Su Jung- I'm more into natural but still prettily projected noses so I'm not super into her kind of aesthetic but she's still pretty though (instagram ID: sujung92k)
GNG- Kind of got put off by bad reviews about them that were popping up on the forum but it's still an ENT specialised clinic and a big one with good facilities so might be worth checking them out. Also there were too many GNG posts here and some seemed like promo posts which felt sort of shady tbh.
GOWOONSESANG- Didn't manage to do a consultation with them but have heard good things.
PS101- wow what an elusive clinic. It's difficult to get a reply from them and when you do be prepared for the next available date to be a minimum of one month later. This is because I think their surgeon Doctor Paik only does one surgery a day (That's what i've heard at least), you need to set up an appointment at least a month to 2 prior to visiting.

Clinics I consulted with online and IN PERSON:

VIP - Wouldn't really say I consulted with them in person because I was late for my appointment and the doctor wasn't free to see me but just wanted to state my first impression. I wanted an opinion on using solely autologous material for the revision which is why I wanted to see them but at the end of the day I don't think I'm ready to take that plunge into a more invasive method yet. They have consultants that speak english and when i went in I saw several foreign patients at the waiting area.
MVP - Seemed like a rather popular clinic. I saw both locals and foreigners at the waiting area and their consultant Elizabeth speaks engish. She tried to answer all my questions but didn't seem particularly friendly or approachable. I wanted to consult with both Dr Seo and Dr Choi (their head) but ended up only consulting with Dr Seo. I'm not sure if it's because he was rushing into surgery but the entire consultation felt rather rushed and not very informative at all.. I was also not entirely in favor of the method he suggested.
MIGO - They have a very fluent translator there at the moment (Charlie) who seems very nice as well (she sounds pretty native and speaks thai as well cuz she went to international school in Thailand or something) so she pretty much translates exactly what you want to convey to the surgeon. I can speak and understand a bit of korean so I can still pick out whether or not the translator is doing an accurate job but for people who don't speak any korean at all you really have to really and trust in your translator/consultant. I think that is really important factor to consider when it comes to such an important decision as you need to be able to convey everything you want to convey to the surgeon. Many clinics however have translators or consultants that honestly speak very subpar english and can pretty much only convey half the nuance. Before I start rambling on again hahaha let me get back to the main point. I consulted with Dr Kang Eun Taek. He seemed like a very confident person and I know he's rather well known because I've seen him being mentioned at medical symposiums and stuff like that while doing my research. He wasn't particularly warm or friendly and pretty much kept a straight face though.
THE CLASS& MIZAIN (I haven't seen it being mentioned in this forum before so I'm not sure if anyone else has more information on this clinic) The consultant I mentioned earlier, Olivia recommended me Dr Kim Sang Woo whom she said is a very experienced doctor in this area. The clinic is located in the upscale area of Cheongdam-Dong and the consultant seemed to be pretty knowledgeable. However they didn't have a translator for me and let one of their nurses who spoke some english do the job. Overall that clinic somehow gave me the feeling that their surgeon would be pretty skilled but I just didn't feel comfortable with the other aspects like not being able to put across what I wanted to say a hundred percent etc.
UVOM - Uvom was actually the first clinic I consulted with during my prior trip to Seoul in October and they left me a very good impression. I was so sure I was going to go with them after my consultation at first because Dr Lee Jung Soo was so patient and thorough with his consultation I would say that out of all the doctors I consulted with he MOST DEFINITELY spent the most time with me in the consultation room. He was very detailed and did not rush me at all and took time to explain the surgical methods and draw out diagrams. Their consultant Susan is also gives off the impression of being an extremely sweet and sincere person although her english isn't as good as Charlie from Migo or Claire from NAMUps.
COCOLINE - They did not have any staff that spoke english when I went (Only the doctor spoke a bit of english) so I pretty much had to wriggle my way through with my limited use of the language. However I do know that they are a pretty popular smaller clinic in Korea.
VIEW (the same clinic I had my primary at) - Although they pretty much offered me the lowest price out of all the clinics since I did my primary with them and this was the revision, which I must admit, was tempting. The previous surgeon that did my nose at VIEW previously had already left so I consulted with Dr Lee Dong Chan (who I know if popular amongst forummers for doing eyes + facial contouring). However, the consultation was short and the doctor did not seemed to concerned with talking about the obvious problems with my nose (pretty much everyone else said the starting point of my implant was way too high. He even sort of insinuated that it looked OKAY which made me really lose all confidence to place the fate of my nose in their hands once more. Also I feel like they promise more than they can deliver because they make you feel like they will really look after you well but they really they don't. Another thing with bigger hospitals is I feel like they tend to change your consultant whenever they want so you feel like you're being tossed around. THAT BEING SAID, the word on the street here in korea is that View is a pretty reputable hospital but who knows maybe their service for foreigners just isn't as good and it's a better hospital for locals??

(again pm me if you really really want more info on my experience at VIEW otherwise I won't elaborate so much for now)

DREAM - Felt the most impersonal out of the lot but also the building looked the most corporate and professional. Consulted with their head doctor Kim Young Joon (he's famous for doing closed rhinos but they said he could do open as well if needed). Also had the highest quotation (apart from VIP cuz they do rib). Seemed like a reputable clinic and I waited the longest there but the consultation was short and the whole thing just felt too impersonal for me to be able to put my trust in them.

NAMUPS (MY CURRENT CHOICE)
I actually consulted with NAMU thrice- once during my prior trip and twice this time and all 3 times I went there were both a handful of local patients and a handful of foreigners at the waiting area. Their consultant Claire was the one dealing with me from day 1 till now and she's very knowledgeable about all these procedures and understands exactly what you need to have done. She also tells you very honestly if she personally does not think you need the procedures you want and isn't pushy. She's also very nice, chatty and patient and takes time to answer all your questions which doesn't make it feel everything feel so rushed like some of the other consultants do. Many clinics will actually keep on asking you to place a deposit.. I think many of them have stopped that now because they know it probably pushes patients away instead. Anyway Claire has honestly been very kind and helpful so far with everything and might be one of the reasons I chose Namu but of course I can't tell you that I'm going to be happy with everything until AFTER the surgery so fingers crossed!! I will try my best to post some updates after the surgery as well and of course I can also better share my perspective and experience once I've actually gone and dunnit.
Back to the main point again, my surgeon with be Dr Joung Soo Woo who has had years of experience. My research online tells me that he was previously at Banobagi (I searched on both google and NAVER) and this place called NAVI? Although he didn't spend as long with me during the consultation as I would have wanted, the reason why I decided to put my trust in him is that he could spot exactly what I was unhappy with and how those things should be corrected without me having to tell him first. Also although he isn't particularly warm he does give off a trustworthy vibe with the way he looks and speaks haha and he did seem to understand my aesthetic. Claire also did keep reassuring me that he's a very detailed and skilled surgeon.
Pricing wise, NAMU's quotes were also very reasonable and Claire does throw in free goodies. I've also heard good things about their dermatology department which I will elaborate more about after my experience with them!

Previously I always wondered why people would take the time to write such long posts on their experiences but as I type this I'm beginning to understand why. I kind of feel like I might go rambling on and on if I don't stop myself and I guess it kind of helps with the nerves as well? I dunno.
Either way wish me luck and let me know if I left out anything you would like to know more about!
I'm so friggin nervous because It almost feels as if my life depends on this cuz I just want to move forward and on y'know?

p.s Will be back with more updates on my op and experience with NAMU PS!

That's really strange, because I had consultation with Dr. Lee Dong Chan in October before my rhino and he was my operating doctor. My consultation was really detailed and he asked me to bring the picture so he could explain if the nose I wanted was possible or not. He even posted the photos in the operation room to make my nose look as similar as possible so I was surprised.
I refrain from saying the result is awesome until it deswells completely, but I like it so far and it hasn't bruised much for rhino

I guess everyone’s experience can differ. I heard a lot of good things about dr Lee as well but my consultation with him lasted literally like a couple of minutes. I’m not sure if it’s because I was a returning patient or something but what he said just did not give me the kind of assurance I needed. I hope your nose turns out the way you want when it deswells!
