My Genioplasty Experience to remove chin implant at IDEA Plastic Surgery Clinic by Dr Jin Hoon

Recommended Posts

Warning!
This is going to be a long read. Recently I undergone a chin surgery to remove my implant and I'm going to share my entire genioplasty experience. Apologies for the wordiness. Enjoy if you're the type who likes detailed reviews.

BACKGROUND
I have underwent chin augmentation in 2016 with Dr Seo at MVP plastic surgery clinic and successfully rectified existing short chin issue. A 6mm chin implant was deliberately chosen and expertly placed by Dr Seo to great effect, so much so that several surgeons have commented that it was a job well done. It looked natural and improved my chin projection and side profile greatly.

Fast forward to year 2017, I visited IDEA Plastic Surgery Clinic and consulted with Dr Jin Hoon on face contouring. The CT scan revealed a borderline class 2 maloccusion, yet it wasn't serious enough to warrant a majorly invasive two-jaw surgery.

Nonetheless Dr Jin of IDEA recommended the removal of the chin implant as they tend to lead to undesirable and inevitable bone loss at the implant site (chin bone). Advanced genioplasty was suggested in place of the implant to reproduce the effect of the existing chin projection and to stop and prevent further chin bone loss.

I ended up not having that surgery but only proceeded with the zygoma and lower smas facelift (See this thread: https://beautyhacker.com/forums/topic/975644-my-zygoma-facelift-experience-at-idea-plastic-surgery-clinic-oct-2017/).

Although I did not proceed with genioplasty, I knew that I'll have to remove the chin implant sooner or later. The more I read up, the more paranoid I felt about the potential side effects of having the implant. After going through months of obsession on the chicken n egg dilemma, whether to stop the potential side effects first or to wait for it to happen before I fix it, I finally come to the conclusion that since I'm going to have to fix it at some point, maybe it’s better to do it earlier. That is when my mind is set to have the chin implant remove and replaced with genioplasty surgery.

CONSULTATION
Have consulted with several doctors ( Dr Lee from TFD, Dr Lee and Dr Yoon from View, Dr Choi from Deesse) before I proceeded the surgery with Dr Jin Hoon at IDEA Plastic Surgery Clinic.

I learnt a lot during the consultation with these doctors from other clinics, and wanted to specially mentioned Dr Lee from The Face Dental. One thing I like about this clinic is you get to be in touch with Dr Lee directly through Kakao instead of through a consultant. Dr Lee speaks good command of English and was able to communicate n share his knowledge and honest opinion. He was very detailed and patience towards answering all my queries in the past months of Kakaotalk as well as during face to face consultation. Greatly appreciated the time communicating with him. Dr Lee too noted the thinning of my chin bone at implant site, and recommended genioplasty to replace the implant. The Face Dental is likely to be my next option from my final choice. Shall not go into too much details for the rest of the clinics else this post will go on n on. But you can PM me if you wished to know more.

Decision to choosing Dr Jin Hoon at IDEA Plastic Surgery Clinic:
Since I previously had zygoma n smas facelift done by Dr Jin, I believed he knows my face structure n anatomy best. While my main objective was to remove the chin implant, I'm also looking at making my chin sharper. Being aware of having more soft tissues on my face, my major concern is the possibility of sagging that can occurs. All the other doctors I consulted with suggested T- osteotomy and shaving some mandible bones for sharper chin effect. However was told that I'll likely encounter sagginess which require following up with another lifting to solve my soft tissues problem.

On the other hand, I learnt a different theory from the consultation with Dr Jin. He was the only one who highlighted the possibility of soft tissue (mentalis muscle) bunching at chin area if I were to remove too much bones. The mentalis muscle bunching will lead to an unnatural effect n it will be difficult to fix if it happens. He showed me photos of some patients who encountered that issue after surgery and I rest assured it is definitely a No-No if you had seen those photos. So Dr Jin suggested just advanced genioplasty would do me more good than bad. At that point I was somehow convinced a little. In regards to wanting a sharper chin and defined jawline, I was also told that the chin advancement would help to increase definition of my existing jawline since surface area of the bone structure would increase to hold n stretch the surrounding soft tissues. However, no shaving of the sides since that would removed more bones which contradict with the objective here to retain as much bone area as possible. Basically what Dr Jin had explained was unique but it did make sense to me. After the consultation, it really leads me to a tough decision making, whether to forgo wanting a sharper chin and avoid adverse consequences or to take the risk for a dramatic change.

Another factor that played an important part in my decision was, I've gone through a long way to achieve and pretty satisfied with what I'm having now. To undergo another round of surgery would involved the risk of losing any or bringing something worse, just like betting on a casino table for a Black Jack. Having another round of revision to fix a new arising issue is something I want to avoid.

Personally, I also like IDEA clinic excellent aftercare which I've experienced during my zygoma n facelift done there. It stood out from all the other clinics that I've had surgery. The ownership doctor took to attend the entire post-ops recovery personally is a plus point. Moreover, consultant Weina has been extremely helpful towards assisting me on my queries all these while and following up on my progress of recovery from my previous surgery. What's better than having someone whom you can really trust to take care of you from pre-to-post surgery. So my gut feel let me comes to my decision of going with IDEA PS Clinic.

SURGERY and RECOVERY
Although this wasn't a major surgery compared to what I did last round, it is still a bone surgery. Detailed pre-ops checks including CT scan, blood and urine test, ECG checks were conducted days prior to surgery. My surgery was scheduled at 11am on a Mon. Upon arrival at the clinic, I was brought to my ward which I'll be staying for a night. Got change into the surgical robe n proceeded to photo taking by Dr Jin personally. Final pre-ops consultation with Dr Jin on the surgical plan and re-confirming on a common aesthetic goal with minimum adverse effect. Everything was good to go, I was escorted to the operation theater. Somehow this round I wasn't that nervous, with all the familiar environment and faces of people who will be looking after me. I knew I'll definitely be in good hands.

Shortly after I was knocked out, I heard someone calling my name to wake me. By then I was already lying in the ward and I could see the nurses checking on my blood pressure n IV drip. I took a peep at the time and saw it was 1:10pm. Kind of surprised the surgery only took 2 hrs, even faster than my rhinoplasty. I thought Dr Jin must be really skilled n experienced to be able to perform a bone surgery within such a short time frame. Translator, Yilan told me that surgery was done and shortly after Dr Jin came in to check on me. He asked if there is anywhere I'm feeling uncomfortable. I could feel some dull aching around my chin, but the most painful part was actually my throat. Probably due to intubation from GA, my nose felt stuffy n have difficulty breathing well. So Dr Jin cut n loosen the compression bandage that was pressing on my neck to relieved some pressure n adjusted my lying position which allowed me to breath better. The warmth tender care did ease much of my discomfort. Nurses came to check on my blood pressure every 20 mins.

As usual, the first 4 hrs was always the toughest. I wasn't allowed to drink despite my painful throat yelling for water. Neither am I allowed to fall asleep. Time crawled really slow n I tried to distract myself by constantly texting my friends on the phone. I keep track of the time really close and finally 4 hrs was up! My eyes gleamed with joy the moment Weina came into my room to offer me water. She told me to start gargling my mouth with cold water n repeat every hour including after drinking or eating anything. This was to keep the stitches inside the mouth clean n prevent infection. Shortly after, Dr Jin came to check on me again. He noted my bandage had came lose and he redo the dressing for me to make sure the compression bandage is tight n firm. Knowing that I'm having stuffy nose, Dr Jin applied some nasal spray into my nostril and all of sudden I could breath normally again. I was really touched to be so well taken care.

By then it was almost evening, Weina asked if I'm hungry as they were ordering dinner for me. I thought I would have problem opening my mouth to eat but surprisingly I was able to ate some chicken porridge prepared by the clinic. It was so nice of Weina to even bought me Banana Smoothie with Nuts (a really good protein replacement) knowing that I may have difficulty eating. My first night after surgery wasn't bad at all. I was able to chat with my friend and Weina till late night. Somehow GA has this effect of keeping me awake and I didn't sleep much during the night. Spent most of the time icing my chin area while watching the TV to keep myself occupied. That's how I spent my night in the clinic.

DAY 1 Post Ops
Woke up pretty early this morning. Swelling was almost similar as per Day 0. Other than the sore throat that I'm having from the intubation, I did not really experienced much discomfort. Just a little sore n tightness around the chin area. Dr Jin came to check on me 730am when he arrived at the clinic. I was able to eat some steamed egg bought by Weina. At late morning, Dr Jin removed my compression bandage and replaced with a removable head band. Clinic also helped to wash my hair which was really refreshing and I was discharged late afternoon this day. I started to feel the swelling of my lower face n lips picking up and had a slight fever after reaching back to my Airbnb. Spend the entire night applying ice pack n gargling my mouth with ice water for deswelling. Somehow it helps.

DAY 2 to 4
Swelling was worse than Day 1. My lower lip n face, mainly chin area starts to puff up and it went peaked at Day 3 post-ops. My lower jaw looks squarish without the compression head band n I literally look like chipmunk. Some bruising was seemed at Day 4. I supposed the swelling n bruises were normal since I'm not X-men or Wolverine. Fortunately I get to return to clinic for follow up n deswelling treatment these 3 days when my swelling was worst. Dr Jin also checked n cleaned the wound inside the mouth. I was asked to start on warm pack from Day 3. Did not experience any numbness on my chin area which is a good thing. Although there were stitches inside the mouth, incision site was really small that I hardly felt it's existence. Pain level was probably 3/10 when touched. My daily routine including brushing teeth, wearing retainer, washing face resumed at Day 2, The only extra care required was to gargle my mouth every hour or after meal.

DAY 5 to 14
Major swelling n bruising started to subside. Bruising was almost unnoticed by a week and people hardly can tell I had surgery done. Throughout the recovery, I didn't had much problem eating, only the first 2 days on soft diet, thereafter I started eating everything. Before the surgery, I read that many people needs to be on liquid diet after FC bone surgery so I was prepared that this trip shall be a good opportunity for me to be on diet. I never expect no problem biting anything including Korean fried chicken less than a week post surgery. During my stay in Seoul, I visited clinic almost everyday for deswelling n follow up. Stitches inside the mouth was removed without any pain on last Day 14 post-ops. I was able to return to work right after without people noticing I just had surgery done.

OVERALL
Another wonderful experience at IDEA clinic. Great aftercare n dedicated doctor. I had my 2 most invasive procedures done in IDEA clinic and my recovery had been the fastest among the other less invasive ones. For me, the hardest thing after surgery was the disruption of daily routine (ie. not being able to wash hair/ face for few days) which makes me really uncomfortable n slow down my recovery process. Glad I never had to undergo such inconvenience having surgery at IDEA. This proven to me that while the entire recovery process may varies for different people, it is also dependent on the doctor's skill n after care.

My greatest takeaway was during the consultation with Dr Jin. He never failed to give me his honest and sound opinion. Having >20 years experience and expertise in both bones n soft tissues, Dr Jin takes into consideration relationship between the both during diagnosis to recommend the right surgeries. I appreciate that he shared similar cases which he had come across to highlight possible adverse effects that seldom people focus on. Not many clinics would give true advise not to undergo certain procedures due to these side effects, but Dr Jin actually refused performing those procedures if he thinks it could bring harm than benefit. He doesn't recommend unnecessary procedures where the cons outweighed the pros.

Another thing I've learnt was that while there may be certain results that one may desire for and wanting to achieve it, sometimes you just have to think out of the box and consider other important factors as well. At times some have to be forgo to achieve others.

I'm grateful to Dr Jin and IDEA clinic for their warmth tender care, allowing my recovery to be amazingly fast n hassle free. As for the result, already can see my chin projection is nice & natural looking. Currently 2 months post-ops and looking forward to seeing the final outcome of my new chin.

From what I know, Dr Jin's expertise is in Face Contouring including 2-jaw, mandible, zygoma, genioplasty, etc, everything that got to do with facial bones surgery.

In terms of rhinoplasty, probably more for those that involves osteotomy, not the ones that require the use of implants/autologous graft. He is definitely a "no implant" person.

I agree there isn't much information in English about Dr Jin Hoon as the clinic doesn't do any marketing. I found out more information on him by searching using his Korea name in Naver and doing a translation using Google Chrome. There are also some information in Chinese. You might wan to try via that.

It will be better to contact the clinic or Weina for a more accurate quote since every individual case is unique?

Usually I"ll take online quotes with a pinch of salt as most importantly is the consultation with the doctor. Most of the time you only know whether that is the right clinic n doctor after face-to-face consultation.

Hope that helps!
