ahs483 Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Just looking through here and I realized theres like 3 or 4 threads filled with people who are only on this forum to talk about going abroad for some sort of surgery... im just purely curious, but A) why are you all going abroad? after reading through the threads it all sounds sketchy! B) why are you posting on the purseform? i dont mean this in a rude way at all I would just think there would be other sites that would be more geared toward this information?
coach-louislove Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 I think probably a reason is because it's cheaper. In Canada, most surgeries are covered by our healthcare unless you go private. And it's just cheaper in a lot of countries other than the States.
cheburashka Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Well to answer number one because I do read plastic surgery forums too has to do with ethnicity, usually individuals of asian descent like to go to asian countries for certain surgeries because they have specialized clinics thay have far more experience with that specific ethnic group and ethnic look than an average us doc with that ethnicity, which makes sense. Also some surgeries routinetly performed there seem to be not very well publicized here, like jaw reduction surgery, so I imagine aside from cost this has to be a deciding factor too. Number two probably has to do with traffic and number of forum members. The two supposedly most widely popular ps boards I visit are practically dead and hardly get any movements.
vegas-long-legs Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 I know what your saying is true, but if one thinks about it why would you have cost be a factor if your doing something to your body? The people I know who've went to latin american countries & have had awful results. They ended up spending more to have work redone. Last year there was a gal (32) from LV that went to Mexico for lipo, she died on the table. She was trying to save money! What a shame.
ahs483 Posted May 26, 2011 Author Posted May 26, 2011 hmm. very interesting. thanks for the responses
cheburashka Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Excellent point, not for a rationally thinking individual, unfortunately not everyone has this mindset. A lot of people just want something done and lack for finances so they go and hope for the best, but it doesnt always happen.
coach-louislove Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Oh I completely, 1000000 % agree. I would never, ever go to another country to get a procedure done. I was just answering the question why people do. I'm sure there are other reasons as well but cost I think would be one of them.
coastal112 Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 While I absolutely agree with you ladies on not looking for deals on procedures that have to do with your body, I do think there is a difference between going to Mexico for liposuction and South Korea for, let's say, calf reduction surgery. While it may be cheaper to have this procedure done in SK, many doctors there specialize in this type of surgery and may be known for it. It would be different if someone went all the way to SK to get breast augmentation simply because of the price.
cheburashka Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 I completely agree with you, I talked about that in my post too, a friend of mine is Korean who is studying to be a dentist and he sent me a link with all kinds of cool jaw reduction related surgeries that are performed there. He told me in Korea plastic surgery is completely socially accepted and embraced something like 40% of women get one procedure or another.
girliceclimber Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Totally agree with this. I know for calf reduction and eyelid surgery, you pretty much need to get it done in Korea (or maybe in some big cities like Los Angeles where there are lots of plastic surgeons and Asian people) if you want to get a good job. I've heard that in Korea, getting your eyelids done is quite common, whereas many fewer people get it done here, so all the experienced docs practice over there.
loren8443 Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 I personally don't think plastic surgery is for me, but I see nothing wrong with others doing it. I actually enjoy browsing some of the treads on plastic surgery out of curiosity. As somebody else above mentioned, many of these ladies (and gentlemen) often don't live in the US, so it's not "going abroad" for them. I hope nobody is afraid to post because they feel that their topic isn't welcome, because it most certainly is.
ahs483 Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 I don't know why anyone would feel that their topic wasn't welcome? I cleary state in my original post that I am not trying to be rude, simply curious.
cheburashka Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 Maybe she said that because of the way you phrased the question ? It sort of sounds and forgive me for pointing this out like you may have a little prejudice for example you say " it all sounds so sketchy" in relation to abroad surgery. I am not saying you werent purely curious, but both answers to these questions are so obvious and intuitive in my opinion.
coconutsboston Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 TBH, I've always wondered this too. I feel like my PS was one of the best in the business and I'd happily reccommend him to anyone, but there are certain "normal" surgeries he refuses to perform like nose jobs.
ahs483 Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 I see. I did not mean for that to be offensive, but I have read through some of the threads and even the women on there wrote that they had bad or "sketchy" experiences (like botched surgeries), hence why I wrote that. Sorry in advance if that offended anyone!
