I'm not sure if this is a beauty and makeup question or a health and fitness question since it doesn't completely fall into either category, but here it goes.

I have a really gummy smile. The other day I was telling my mom something important and she just cut me off and commented on how gummy my smile is and how I should correct it blah blah blah. I got soooo annoyed. I was trying to tell her something and all she could focus was some dumb un-related crap!

Anyways, gummy smile may seem so unnatural for some people but I've always had it and I can't help it. How have you guys corrected yours for those of you who had this problem?

I try to rectify it but I find that my eyes go dead and I generally look insincere when I smile with my full set of teeth.

I wonder if a laser procedure will change your mother. She will probably find something new as soon as you changed your gums according to her standards.

OP, my two cents is that you should be thankful for your healthy gums  I have a receding gumline and it sucks!

me too! My colleague has twice the gums I have and I adore her gums. She thinks she look like a child with the smaller teeth (compared to people her age, around 40).

gums rule!

My sister had her lip line lowered, It only took less than an hour under local. Doesn't affect your gums or your teeth, just stops your upper lip going up too much.

My friend has a seriously gummy smile and I sometimes find it distracting. I didn't realize there were easy ways to change it.

Unless your life is affected (depressed), your job demands it (model or actress) , just ignore your mom at all costs. Some moms are really caustic in their comments and don't know when to shut up. I'm sure you have a beautiful smile.

I have small teeth, and one side is slightly more gummy than the other. I can see it on pics but it doesn't really affect me, I just try to get pictures from my "good side" or not stress my smile to the point of resembling Joker.

I too have a gummy smile, I once asked my dentist about it and he said you could do laser like others have mentioned but didn't recommend it for me as he felt it was unnecessary. I know it can be irritating, I personally don't like how I look when my gum shows but I have "taught" myself how to smile so my gum doesn't show in pictures. Honestly, if it bugs other people more than it bugs you I wouldn't do anything about it. I would only look into fixing it if it really really bothers you all the time.

laser gum contouring surgery! It totally changes the smile. I have a big smile and my lip curls upward when I smile. I got gum contouring and it costed almost 200 a tooth! pretty pricey but it is worth it! Before I had teeth like miley cyrus, not a good look in my opinion lol.

just talking about this makes me want to cry...

I was a child with a gummy smile. apparently I had two times the normal amount of gums and tiny chiclet teeth. and since these teeth were horribly crooked and shot off in every direction, the only way I was going to be able to have braces was if I had surgery to double the surface space on my teeth.

I was about 10 when they did this, and back then I guess the laser option didn't exist yet because it was just literally just cutting off the extra gum.

it was horrible, horrible, horrible. soooo traumatizing and painful and I woudn't wish it on anyone.

so I guess what I'm saying is... embrace your gummy smile!! I bet it's not as bad as you think.

(or, have faith that in 2012 periodontics has progressed and you can take care of this with lasers if it truly bothers you :flowers:)

My teenage daughter told me I have a gummy smile a few months back. It seriously hurt my feelings. So much so, that I called my mom and cried. (Silly, perhaps, but I knew she wouldn't laugh at me. Hearing something like that about yourself is rough!) My mom said that a gummy smile is a sign of youth (since your gums recede as you age) and to take it as a compliment. She also reminded me that I have the family smile and I always liked it, so why let my teenager's nasty comment make me feel bad about myself? :amuse: Wise words from Mom, even at my age. It made feel 1000% better, and it hasn't bugged me since.

 i found practicing smiling in the mirror helped alot. Like not smiling too "big" and instead being super aware of the top lip and making sure it stays DOWN ! took practice. but it worked

I had a bit of my gums lasered.

I had a bunch of work done on my teeth before I got married. My two front teeth had gums that were really uneven. A little laser and it was all fixed up.

It was about 4 years ago and was so painless, I don't remember most of it. The thing I do remember was the smell. Lasering your gums smells bad.
