Breast Implant Complications - After 7 Years?!?

Recommended Posts

I was under the impression that implants needed to be replaced every 10 years. I know a woman who had hers for over 10 years with no problems and recently she went to the doctor for a physical and when he was examining her breasts he told her one of her implants had ruptured. She thinks it had happened that morning. She had surgery to replace her implants (she actually went for a small size this time) but a couple weeks after that surgery, her implant ruptured again. After that she got them taken out. She didn't want to mess with them anymore. I would say go to the doc and see if anything is leaking.

^^That was part of why I was so worried! They're getting close to the 10 year mark, and with my diving trip coming up, I didn't want to risk one exploding.

I haven't had much caffiene since Friday, and have experienced little-to-no pain. I guess the caffiene is causing a different side effect now? I'm still keeping my appt to go see the PS just for my own sanity.

No, implants do not necessarily need to be replaced every 10 years. Many doctors will recommend replacement after about 10 years, but in many cases, it is not a necessity. Implant manufacturers do not consider them lifetime devices, but there is no expiration date per say. Many plastic surgeons will tell you that on average, a woman might seek replacement (for various reasons) approximately every 10-15 years. With that said, there are lots of plastic surgeons who have patients that have had trouble-free implants for 25-30 years with no replacement.

Fungal infection in implants is an extremely rare occurrence and doesn't have anything to do with the length of time an implant has been in the body. In the past, plastic surgeons utilized an "open" technique when performing an augmentation, which meant that the saline could come into direct contact with the air. These days, most plastic surgeons utilize a "closed" technique where the the saline is directly injected into the bag and does not come into contact with the air.
Also, I know lots of plastic surgeons and none of them sell implants as lifetime devices (I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but I haven't seen/heard it).

Yea that was an article that got out of control. Almost like an urban legend... An article came out about a saline implant that had mold in it and then it grew into "a friend of my cousins ex wife's sister's mother had mold in her implant" back in the day they had the saline in a bowl and would then inject it into the implant, but now it's all sterile  I was told implants are to be replaced every ten to fifteen years but some people keep theirs even longer. I guess they use the whole "why fix it if it ain't broke" saying lol.

I think it'd be best to book an appointment with your surgeon to discuss your concerns. It's not uncommon for you to develop complications after a surgery, even if it is 7 years. Like with any operation where a foreign object is being inserted into the body, there is a small risk of infection later on in your life - look at Michael Jackson's silicone nose. But I'm not trying to scare you. I'm sure that there isn't a drastic problem where you'll require complete removal of your breast. The pain your experience might just be an indication that it's time for you to change your implants. Yes, most people do usually change their implants after 10 years or so, due to sagging/deflation, etc. So don't worry, just go see your surgeon again

I have been having the same pain in my nipples. Only thing 1998 I had 32 pounds of pressure taken off my shoulders with a breast reduction and two years ago I've been having so much pain in my nipples that they swell up then feel like ice is frozen on them. Pain is so bad and comes/goes. Oh and I too have the fibro cystic breast. You said you had implants. It has to be breast surgery in general that has to be causing this pain. I am going to set up an appointment with a doctor to see why this is happening.
