inlusio Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 Anyone had trouble bringing in more than 10K USD and declaring it at the customs?
anna85 Posted August 13, 2014 Posted August 13, 2014 Hi guys, My question might sound silly but i'll still have to ask: can I exchange 6000 $ at once? Is it safe to change outside banks? Will you have time to check if they give you the good amount of KRW ? You bring a calculator with you?
moreen Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 no is very fast one but a bit troublesome also. When you go through customs you tell them and then they send you through another big room to see another officer and ask why you bring so much. Just explain to them and maybe if you have paperwork show them but no paperwork also no problem one. It take not longer than 30 mins
inlusio Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 Hi Moreen Thank you, that was a really useful piece of information.
nero19 Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I read on south korea customs info you need a declaration if you bring in 10000 US or more, so if i would take 9000 I dont need to sign anything right i can just walk? Sorry if its a dumb question but this really makes me nervous i dont want to lose alot of money on card withdrawals:s
sarinasurgery Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Just a heads up: You have to fill out paperwork to fly with over $10,000 USD cash (the TSA X-ray machine may or may not detect large amounts of cash) I'm planning on bring about $9,000 USD cash to avoid any paperwork and hassle. I know some hospitals can take credit cards, but I'm planning on bringing cash since I can bargain with it and hopefully lower my surgery price at least a little!
moreen Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 yar lah can just talk in as long as you got less than 10000. But even get discount I still feel not safe you know....what if I lose my envelop of money so dangerous. You think use traveler's cheque can save money also? Or must be cash is it?
nero19 Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Thank you for answering, Im goin with a friend for support so we'll both take 9000 each so I have enough, and I wont have to fill in paperwork. Hope they dont pick us in customs:S
moreen Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 good luck and please be careful! i think more paranoid and scared the better because you keep checking every 5 min to make sure money still with you. Maybe I do that too and put it on pouch around my waist to be safer
nero19 Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 yes i will! thank you, I know its scary but what I think is even scarier is those stories about people who's card doesn't work at atms there. Ive had that in other countries and it was terrible, and I won't get a credit card from my bank because I dont make enough money and also those bank/creditcard fees is such a waste because im getting alot done. Lol yes a pouch sounds like a smart idea!
lanvinfiend Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Maybe check with the clinics you're interested in on whether they have discounts for cash. Some don't, so it defeats the purpose of carrying huge wads of cash with you.
shinenim Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 I'd suggest you pay in KRW? They have different and some clinics offer lower exchange rate for USD. Most of the clinics can do slight discount if you pay in cash but I am not sure for all My friend had to withdraw so much money out from the ATM and every withdrawal (to a max of 100,0000) cost her USD 5 for per transaction.... is this normal cos I may need to withdraw cash too.. But the handling fees is like a little too high ):
