I had double jaw surgery with v-line 6 weeks ago at Face Dental. I am able to smile as I did before, I have no paralysis, I am finally able to chew things that are partially soft (but not hard just yet) and I look very natural. My long face has been corrected the only remaining issue is my philtrum still appears a bit long, but not as long as it once was. My mouth previously protruded, I had a long, wide chin, My jawline was pretty square and wide and the middle of my face was a bit too long. I had a bit of a hardened masculine look to my face that I found unattractive. I do feel the surgery improved my appearance.

But after surgery I have noticed that my lower face looks heavy. My masseter muscles look swollen (they just look huge and stick out far from my face when smiling) and my chin has a square appearance but only when smiling and the swelling will make it some days appear very long, and other days appear masculine and wide. I find it a little distressing to see how the swelling is causing my chin and masseter muscles to look. But like I said, all this happens only when I smile.

I have been told to give this time, but I want to know if others that had double jaw surgery had strange swelling like this? Was your chin square after the surgery? Was your masseter muscles swollen and protruded far from your face?

When I view my xrays, my bones look so pretty; very v-line and feminine but I still see a square chin and big masseter muscles. I am looking forward for my skin and muscles to mimic the shape of my bones.

Yes and yes to both problems (but not only when I smile!)

I am 4 months post op and my masseter is still swollen, particularly on one side. It gives me a slightly square look to my face, as you say. It also makes me look a bit "chip-munky" in photos.

You are only 6 weeks post op - you have a long way to go with your swelling.

Honestly, this is the longest surgery I have ever had to recover from

Things that help:

> exercising in the morning. I found this helps the swelling go down and not look so bloated.

> keep wearing your chin strap. I definitely notice swelling is less obvious if I wear my chin strap overnight and whenever I can when I'm at home.

> de-swelling LED laser treatments. Since I booked in for a pack of 10 of these I have noticed significant improvement in my healing.

I have the added problem of some remaining numbness (about 10%) in my chin and lip. My bottom lip was sticking out a little unnaturally in one part too until about this week. It's getting better every week but it has been a very slow road.

It will all go away - it just takes time
