Yes, her mother wrote to him before her first op, saying that she'd been diagnosed with a mental health condition and asking him to reconsider, or something to that effect. I know this because Mariana stated this on LYB UK, actually bemoaning the fact he "ignored" it and put her in a situation where she disliked her nose more, and I read it. I must try to find the exact post she made - it must've been at least 4 years ago when the forum was active. At that time, it actually struck me as very significant, for her mother to do this. Perhaps because it was quite unusual. Having not seen pictures of her at that point in time, I chalked it up to a meddling mother who couldn't let go of her adult daughter, but all the evidence points to the fact that there was indeed a more serious cause for concern.

ah ok i see your point now about responsibility of the surgeon. At first I was wondering how on earth would he know she was unstable but if her mother notified him then well...

Dr Ion ruined my nose too. He made it fat, short and flat. I am suicidal too

About Mariana:
Yes, she went to Lucian Ion in London. According to an old forum post of Mariana's on LookYourBest UK, her mother wrote to him beforehand, asking him to reconsider. Aside from any obvious bias or moral objection to PS, in this case, it's evident she was a beautiful girl with an ideal nose to begin with. Yet these realities did not deter Ion from performing 3 rhinoplasties on her (1 primary and 2 revisions). According to one guy who knew her well, this sent her down the rabbit hole and was the reason behind her subsequent Korean trips. But it's clear this wasn't a cumulative result of surgery alone - she had many longstanding issues of different kinds. I really feel for those who tried to help her, as well as her friends and poor mother. It's incredibly sad when I think about it.

Someone mentioned to me via PM that we tend to see posts like this often - only in hindsight do we notice they were a cry for help.

@MissOrange I don't know how many revisions she had at April31 but from her SM it seems she was there twice - perhaps she had a consult on her first trip?

@K Couture After her Ion surgeries, she was left with a shorter, flatter nose that lacked projection - almost a snub nose. If you PM me I can send you a link. Perhaps the results you saw represented the later improvements made? Even that wasn't a true "botch", although her old nose complemented her Slavic facial structure and was, in itself, an attractive and symmetric nose. Her facial proportions were ideal, so there was nothing positive to be gained from tampering with the overall size, shape or length, IMO. My understanding is that she worked as a model for the alt scene, which I think goes some way towards explaining why she "dramatised" her natural good looks with various surgeries and body modifications.

Pfffffttt - Lucian Ion. Honestly, I don't blame him for Mariana's tragic end, but I DO think surgeons are partly accountable for sad outcomes like this. Unlike most, I had his hypocrisy sussed from the outset, despite the Realself litany of praise. He's acquired a reputation for being something of a revision specialist, but he isn't the antidote to everyone's nasal woes because - if you look closely - he almost exclusively focuses on making attractive young men and women look "perfect", and shies away from rectifying some of the more obvious, occasionally devastating problems arising from bad surgery and/or genetics.

In my view, making attractive people better looking is akin to picking the lowest hanging fruit; it doesn't take a genius to work out that "good results" look better when the face is conventionally attractive to begin with. It's a good marketing strategy, particularly in this day and age of social media sharing.

A cursory look at Ion's Realself profile will tell you as much. From private conversations as well as my own negative experience with him, Ion's "exit strategy" involves telling people with genuine, difficult issues that they have BDD and/or psych issues in order to get off the hook, instead of being truthful and stating he can't help. Yet all the while, he's doing multiple surgeries on people who literally don't stand to gain any kind of improvement from surgery, like Mariana - the very definition of someone with such problems.

She had a perfect nose and the plastic surgeons replying to her on realself even suggested that even though the tip could be refined, she leave it alone as she contemplated whether she needed rhino. Her comments in various real self posts shares that lots of people told her to leave her nose alone but she went ahead and had rhino and then became very isolated when her nose tip became wide and short. It is so sad to read how she struggled to live with this nose which looked worse than her untouched nose (she shared photos before and after) and the pain she felt when she realised she should never have touched her nose and tried to get it back. She even sought advice from a girl who had lived with a deformed nose for years before getting it fixed as she could not live with her nose and this girl had coped. A plastic surgeon should NEVER operate on a perfect nose no matter how demanding a patient is. I feel deeply saddened that she should never have been put on this journey as she had a perfect nose to begin with. Please ladies seek lots of opinions and if the majority say leave your face alone, then do so. Today I met a tpfer in London and he was kind enough to give me his opinion on my short nose and he said it was fine, leave it alone which I will do especially after reading Mariana's painful posts on tpf and realself. This nose journey ends for me. RIP Mariana. You were let down by the medical community.

I am so depressed. Lucian absolutely ruined my life. This man thinks he is the God of Rhinoplasty.
He butchered me then told me I have BDD and to see a psychiatrist?!
I am 41 years old. Never had “issues” in my life. Always had fantastic mental health.
These surgeons who post fake reviews on themselves ought to be ashamed! They do this to boost their ratings. Every month a new surgeon is flavor of the month.

What he has done to be is shocking. He should be banned from practice

@Marie1000 So very sorry to hear this. The OP's Realself profile can be found earlier on in this thread, where a link was posted.

The most important thing is, at this stage, to hang on. Vent all you need to. We have been there ourselves and have lived this nightmare. Some of the posters on this thread have a great deal of experience with revision rhinoplasty. Please reach out to them. You will be amazed at what a properly executed revision can achieve, particularly if this was your first nose procedure. You will have a very difficult year ahead, but proper research and not rushing into the next disaster are absolutely essential.

You're a 41-year-old lady who knows her own mind. Recover your strength, get back to him, tell him straight up that he's using "BDD" as an attempt to deflect the blame onto you, and that you will NOT be seeing a psychologist.

Edited to add: please make an appointment with your GP as an emergency case and get seen TODAY. This is a very typical response to bad PS, we have all had the same! Your objective right now must be to "ride the wave" - get medication that could at least stabilise your mood whilst you search for a revision. Your problems are FIXABLE - I promise you. Please don't take your own life over issues that CAN and WILL be corrected

@Marie1000 sorry to hear about your situation. Instead of a psychiatrist, rather go see a psychologist who you can talk to and they can help you with coping techniques while you are healing and they can help you find a way to tackle the problem with the surgeon.

Please don't resort to taking your life because you have support but it is best to see a professional to assist with your situation. The first rhinoplasty is always the hardest, some heal faster than others. Don't do anything irrational at this stage. Wait for the swelling and scar tissue to heal before revising your nose. Use this time to search for other reputable doctors. As @heylo said, vent all you need to. So please don't feel alone because at some point everyone has had some mishap but it can be fixed. You'll have to give it some time. Even if it means wearing those allergy masks. The first few months can rough but please don't give up!

What a waste of money. Did you ask him for your money back? I intend to.
