ppsusan Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 Dear all, I just had my mandible reduction surgery done. Now it is 20 days post op. I noticed my bottom lip asymmetry a week ago. I pointed to my surgen in Seoul. I was told it is still being recovered and should recover after months. However, my left bottom lip cannot move at all. Right bottom lip can move and lower the right bottom lip. On the contratry, my left bottom lip is completely frozen. The terrible thing is I already left Seoul and back to hometown. I visited local hospital in general. I was told it might due to paralysis of the left marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. I am extremely scared. The surgeon refused to claim it is due to nerve damage and keep requsting me to calm down and wait till full recovery. Does anyone has the similar symptom as my case? I really appreciate sincerely. Please help !!! Many many thanks !!!
mermaidrhapsody Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 Hi, Sorry to read that you are experiencing such issues. I have not undergone any jaw/facial contouring sugeries but I did a lot of reading on nerve damage when I was contemplating undergoing ASO and came across this on realself:https://www.realself.com/question/neck-liposuction-chin-implant-paralyzed-lip The general view among doctors is that if the nerve has not been cut but only injured it should take 6-12 weeks for the injured nerve to recover and see improvements. You are only 20 days post-op so its still early. In the meantime you may want to start taking more nerve regeneration foods and vitamins to maximise your chances of recovery. Good luck!
ppsusan Posted August 22, 2016 Author Posted August 22, 2016 Hi, mermaidrhapsody. Thank you so much for your very kind warm reply. I read the story you sent to me. Yes, it is kinda similar. However, my case belongs to absolutely open surgery. Hence, it is a little more risky to damage the nerve. Nevertheless, I can notice a very little, I mean subtle/microscope, movement of the corner muscle of my injured bottom lip. Hopefully, this is the good sign that my nerve is not completely cut off. Once again, I really appreciate your encouragement and very timely precious help. Best wishes for all of us.
ppsusan Posted August 22, 2016 Author Posted August 22, 2016 Dear mermaid, If you do not mind, would you please help to advise nerve regeneration foods and vitamins? I know B1 & B12 are good for nerve. Not sure food. I was told to avoid seafood, which I believe provides best protein. Maybe for allergy reason. But I am good for seafood. Lol. Any advice of food treatment for nerve recovery? Thanks again. Susan
mermaidrhapsody Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 Hi Susan, You are welcome besides B1 and B12 and protein you mentioned, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon and cod are said to help, here is an article I bookmarked:https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/01/120111103856.htm I think it might be better to avoid seafood such as prawns and crabs while your surgical site is still healing, but fish should be ok. Antioxidant rich food such as tomatoes, broccoli, blueberries, raspberries and green tea supposedly also help the body heal and nerves to regenerate. There are probably other examples that can be found if you google "nerve regeneration food". Best wishes for your healing
ppsusan Posted August 22, 2016 Author Posted August 22, 2016 Hi, mermaid. Once again, you provide all of us a chapter from your own textbook. Your analysis is so insightful. Will completely follow up. I will post my change or no change after a while. Now, I may take a calm breath and wait. Thank you very much !
