Hi All, what's the difference between using ear cartilage and without it for rhinoplasty?
Some doctor recommend using ear cartilage but I'm not sure what's the reason of using it.
And any side effects of using ear cartilage?
Anyone can advise me? Thanks!

Septal (nose) cartilage is usually preferred as 1) it doesn't require another incision on the ear and 2) it is generally more suitable for the nose as it's already in the nose lol. But not everyone has enough septal cartilage so the doctor may harvest ear cartilage as a result. It's usually not a choice you're given, like "oh do you want to use nose or ear cartilage?" but rather based on what your doctor recommends, based on the amount of cartilage you have in your nose vs your desired tip projection

Ear or septal cartilage (inside your nose) is what is used most often in primary rhinoplasty. Rib, irradiated cartilages, dermis etc tends to be used in revisions. Your bridge can be done via silicone but the tip cannot. This is because if silicone or any artificial material is used in the tip, it greatly increases the risk of extrusion and infection. Silicone previously had a bad name to it due to the L shape implant used. Modern silicone comes in the ultra soft form which does not pressure the tissues. Even then the shape used is an "I" shape silicone where it does not extend beyond the bridge to the tip.
