fairybox Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Hi! I know you can get DES with pros ist correction, but if you get incisional des isn't it sort of like ptosis correction as you're getting rid of extra skin? I'm trying to decide if I want incisional des on its own or with ptosis correction
jennie0906 Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Actually, incisional cannot get rid of much excessive skin. Ptosis correction is to make your eyelid muscle stronger, so that way, you can open your eyes more easily and bigger. If you get rid of too much excessive skin, you may not be able to close your eyes when you sleep.. So definitely, I recommend that you get a consultation with a doctor and listen to what he says to see how much extra skin you have an etc.
ryalin1 Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 Blepharoplasty deals with getting rid of excess skin, while ptosis repair deals with changing the actual resting position of your eyelid when open. You are right though, that sometimes double eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is all that's needed to get beautiful big eyes. Look at this 25 year old female: http://imgur.com/a/Sdu3N All she had was double eyelid surgery. If you have too much excess skin, then yes just double eyelid surgery will really open up the eyes. And don't worry about lagophthalmos (incomplete eyelid closure) because that's almost always occurs (if it does) in secondary/revision cases and in primary cases it only occurs due to botched jobs which means your surgeon sucks, so as long as you choose a reputable surgeon, that really won't happen. Any postoperative lagophthalmos is due to swelling that goes away in a couple of weeks to a month. I'd like to point out almost all ptosis repairs done for cosmetic reasons are levator advancements, meaning you do not touch the levator muscle, but instead advance the aponeurosis (the tendon that attaches from the levator muscle to the tarsal plate). Levator resection actually strengthens the muscle, but that's usually for congenital ptosis where patients get it done for medical reasons and not beauty reasons. If you could post a picture of your eyes, that would help a lot! Be careful of one thing though! Plastic surgeons in south korea like to recommend ptosis correction for 3 reason: 1) make more money 2) safety to ensure you are satisfied with big eyes and 3) make patients feel they did it for medical reasons and not superficial ones. It's a generalization but in my experience, US surgeons less likely to recommend ptosis while Korean surgeons are very much likely to do so. If money and extra swelling (adding in ptosis correction will cause some more swelling) is not a problem, then ptosis repair with advancement is very safe since you can adjust the height of the lid during surgery so you won't end up with a surprised look (with resection you have to determine the height before you operate, so if you notice asymmetry during the operation...too bad). There was this video on reddit Asian beauty section where a girl went to South Korea to have double eyelid surgery and the surgeon claimed she had ptosis and she then stated she realized she wanted eyelid surgery unconsciously for medical reasons because she kept having to lift her eyebrows to see.....which based on her pre-op pictures is completely BS, but I don't think she was lying....she managed to make herself believe based on the surgeon.
