Hi everyone. For context, I'm a Singaporean guy. I've always wanted double-eyelid surgery (DES) + Rhinoplasty, and I started doing my PS research back in Dec 2024 in preparation for my trip to Seoul in Mar 2025. I remember feeling so overwhelmed by the amount of information available when first starting out that research became such a daunting process, so I decided to provide a simple framework for those who are just starting out in their PS research. Additionally, I will share my online consultation findings (+ price quotation charts) from following this research process. Section 1's target audience is newbies. If you've been on this journey for a while, feel free to skip to Section 2 to check out the prices and online consult findings. There's no right way to go about it, but having a framework in place would cut through the noise substantially, so here's the process I took: (Part A: Preliminary research) Research Desired procedures: What procedures do you want/need? Procedures can be broken down into many sub-categories. During consult, surgeon may recommend these, so it's good to understand them beforehand. Double-eyelid surgery (DES) Incisional and non-incisional methods Type of eye line (in-line, in-outline, semi-outline, outline) Ptosis correction (to correct droopy eyelids) Canthoplasty (upper, lateral, medial/epi, lower) Rhinoplasty (nose) Open vs closed method Sub-procedures: nose bridge enhancement, tip plasty, alarplasty, osteotomy, septoplasty) Materials for nose bridge (silicone, fascia, own/donor rib cartilage) Materials for tip plasty (ear/septal cartilage, own/donated rib cartilage) Pros & cons/risks of each option (different materials have diff tradeoffs - e.g. silicone bridge gives a better appearance, but small chance of infection) Risks associated with each procedure Estimated costs of each procedure Recovery periods - for you to plan your travel & leave dates around Research Desired outcomes: What high-level outcomes do you want to achieve? Eyes: unevenness? Get rid of tired/unfriendly appearance? Reveal more pupil to look more awake? Nose: more defined/sharper tip? Higher bridge? Smaller width? Gather online reference pics: gather online pictures of celebrities/idols whose features fit the desired outcomes that you want to achieve. Be optimistic but also realistic about your expectations. The surgeon will ask for your reference pics during online/f2f consult. Have them ready, saved in a folder and categorized nicely into eyes/nose pics. After researching your desired procedures and desired outcomes, you'll be able to make an informed decision on the sub-procedure you need to achieve your desired outcomes For eyes, you'll need to decide the type of eye-line. Surgeon would also recommend based on your facial structure, but have an answer in your back pocket. For nose, you'll need to decide on which sub-procedure is appropriate for you, which materials to use. This can be used as a sanity check against the surgeon's recommendations. You do not want to be caught off-guard if the surgeon recommends unnecessary procedures (e.g. osteotomy, but your nose is already narrow) (Part B: Narrowing down your clinic/surgeon options) Research Doctors & Shortlist clinics: this is the most time-consuming part of the research process. Gather B&A reference pics: review pictures of work done by the doctors - whether a surgeon is able to deliver the results you want would most likely be the single biggest deciding factor for you to decide whether you want to consult with a clinic Check review apps (such as Gangnam Unni) to look for before & after cases that fit your facial profile, whose results you like. This will give you an idea of what is achievable by which surgeon, based on similar facial structure to yours. Start building a list - name of clinic, surgeon, area of speciality, etc Screenshot/save the B&A images and document them well. Check reviews and ratings Reviews: in-depth reviews on forums/apps (like Purseforum/Beauty Hacker/Gangnam Unni) will give you a glimpse into the professionalism and attitude of specific surgeons, whether they have a pre-defined style that they try to replicate on everyone, whether they're highly specialized in something but weak in other things, whether they're patient and willing to listen to your needs and customize the plan to cater to your desired outcomes. Reviews also reveal the professionalism of the staff at the clinic, the environment, etc, but these may be secondary considerations. Ratings: I checked Gangnam Unni, Google, and Naver maps star ratings. Take these numbers with a pinch of salt, as reviews can be bought/manipulated. However, use these ratings to weed out the clinics with highly negative reviews that are legitimate complains. Shortlist Online consult clinics Based on B&A pictures and reviews/ratings, shortlist a handful of clinics that you wish to reach out to for online consult. As online consults are way less time consuming than F2F consults, feel free to shortlist as many clinics/surgeons as your time allows. Generic advise One key piece of advise I received was to prioritize research on surgeons over clinics, since the surgeon will be the one performing the procedure. Sources like Gangnam Unni (app), Purseforum, Beauty Hacker, Babitalk, Sungeyesa provide reviews of work done by specific surgeons. Ensure surgeon is board certified (Korean Association of Plastic Surgeons - KAPS) Google selected clinics to ensure they're not blacklisted Avoid factory clinics as they are more profit-driven, less personable, and have the power/resources to suppress negative reviews and pay for positive reviews. As a general benchmark, I consider a clinic with >=10 surgeons to be a factory clinic. Another telltale sign of factory clinics is that they pop up as the top results when you do generic Google searches like "best plastic surgery clinic korea". These clinics have big budgets to do heavy advertising, and the costs will be covered by inflated prices, esp to foreigners. Do Online Consultation: reach out to the clinics you shortlisted based on your research in the previous step to ask for your target surgeon's recommended procedures and price quotations Prepare 3 things: Have your reference pics ready (both online celebrities and surgeon's before & after work) to send the clinic to show your desired outcomes Have your own pics ready (front profile, 45degree, side profiles, top-down and bottom-up pics if doing nose) to send the clinic to allow surgeon to analyze your facial structure for tailored recommendations Draft your online consult message so that you can copy-paste in Whatsapp over & over (together with your reference/own pics) Sample online consultation template: Hi, I am planning to visit South Korea in {insert date} and am interested in undergoing {insert procedure}. Both would be my first cosmetic procedures. I would appreciate your guidance on the following: Surgery Details Double Eyelid Surgery: Desired outcomes {insert desired outcomes} Given my desired outcomes, what procedures do you recommend? What double eyelid line is suitable for my eyes? (in-line, in-outline, semi-outline, out-line) Rhinoplasty: Desired outcomes {insert desired outcomes} Given my desired outcomes, what procedures do you recommend? If required, what cartilage options do you recommend (e.g., septal, ear, rib)? If I choose to do the surgeries separately, which one should be done first? Cost and Packages What is the estimated cost for each procedure and the combined package? Does the cost include: Consultation fees? Pre-surgery tests (e.g., bloodwork)? Post-surgery care and medications? Are there any promotions, packages, or discounts for {insert date}? Logistics How long is the recovery period for each surgery? Are interpretation services available for non-Korean speakers? Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to your response. My Information Full name: Date of birth: Nationality: Contact number: Surgery History: Desired consultation & surgery dates: (Part C - Book your F2F Consultations) Choose among shortlisted clinics for in-person consultations: from B1 (B&A pics, reviews & ratings) and B2 (recommended procedures, price quotations), you will have sufficient information to decide which surgeons/clinics you want to have F2F consult with. I took a blended approach of 4 factors to select the clinics. Surgeon's B&A Pics: as I mentioned, probably the single most important factor. Is the surgeon's track record for your desired procedures good? Do you like the style of the work they deliver? Price quotation: is the price quoted for individual procedures reasonable? How does it compare to market averages? Any promos available? Surgeon's recommendations: are you comfortable with the surgeon's online consult recommendations? Did they give personalized recommendations based on your unique facial structure, or is their online consult response more generic copy-paste stuff? Are their recommendations in-line with your expectations of what you need/want? Are they recommending procedures which you think are unnecessary? Reviews and Ratings: covered above - read reviews/ratings to get a sense of doctor/clinic's level of professionalism, attitude towards patients, aftercare standards, etc. Take positive star ratings with a pinch of salt. Be wary of negative ratings - look out for legitimate complaints and use them to weed out the clinics/surgeons with too many red flags. Book your appointments for F2F consultation with selected clinics State clearly the name of the doctor that you intend to consult with, for which procedure. If you are unsure, you can check Gangnam Unni or with the clinic themselves. Given how important of a decision this is (it's your face card after all), it makes sense to invest more time upfront in choosing the right surgeon. Therefore, I suggest booking at least 3 consultations a day, across 2 days, to do f2f consults. To maximize efficiency, save all the shortlisted clinics into a list on Naver maps (you'll be using this over Google maps in Korea). Categorize them into cluster A, B, C and so on, based on proximity. Schedule your consultations in a way that minimizes travel time i.e. Day 1: have 3 consults with clinics in cluster A, Day 2: another 3 consults with clinics in cluster B/C. You get the drift. The recommendation here is to space out your consultations with min of 2-hour intervals. Accounting for waiting time, delays, travel time (if the route is unoptimized), I would personally feel more comfortable with 2.5 to 3 hour intervals between consults. Look up the opening hours of clinics beforehand - most close earlier on Saturdays (around 4-5pm), and don't work on Sundays. (Part D - Generic Advise) This section is pretty standard stuff you'd expect from preparing for a trip, just for completeness's sake. Prepare for F2F consultation Prepare a list of questions to ask the doctor during your F2F consultation Prepare a notepad to take notes Prepare your photos (B&A pics, reference pics) to show surgeon in person Price negotiations: another poster suggested to never accept the first offer. A common practise nowadays seems to be for the clinic reps to quote ridiculously jacked up prices first, ask you for your budget, then make a better offer that accommodates your budget, so that you feel like you are getting a good deal. Neat psychological trick that is probably widely used. Logistics Book accommodations near the clinics in the Gangnam district to reduce commute and make your life easier. Agoda/AirBnB has decent deals. Buy winter clothing...Korea is cold in this period. Figure out the payment plan - change a huge amount of cash or to use credit card? In fact, I need to do more research on this. Would really appreciate some advise on this, as some clinics offer 10% discount if you pay in cash, but some give up to 7% VAT refund if you pay with credit card. What do people typically do? Option 1: convert a boatload of cash and just pay with cash Option 2: convert to KRW using apps like Revolut/Transferwise, then pay with app's virtual CC at the clinic Option 3: simply pay with credit card issued by your home country's bank Consider hiring a translator - although many clinics have in-house translators, they may be working in the interest of the clinic. A good hired translator will not only help convey your desired outcomes to the doctor clearly, they may also be able to help you negotiate fair prices. Recommended time to go Korea Someone did an excellent in-depth post (Best time to visit Korea) on the peak periods to avoid and the best months to go. That concludes this section. I may post more updates after my trip begins, to share about the F2F consultations, thoughts on the doctors/clinics, and surgery/recovery process, etc. Section 2: Online Consult with 13 clinics + Price Quotation Charts Now, on to Section 2. This section covers my findings from Section 1, Part B2: Online Consult, and Part C1: how I finalized shortlisted clinics for F2F consults. I will post the quotation charts first, then provide the detailed table with full breakdown of the procedure recommendations and quotations I received with these 13 clinics. I reached out to these clinics for online consultation in late Dec 2024, so adjust your expectations accordingly, depending on when you are reading my post. Final prices in these charts are presented after cleaning up the data - adjusted for VAT/currency, some assumptions were also made if the breakdown wasn't clear (e.g. clinic quoted lump sum, I deducted the extra procedures to arrive at just the DES + Ptosis bits). I will include full raw dataset in table format if you want to analyze . It contains the detailed breakdown of the recommendations and prices that every clinic gave me. (Part A: Double Eyelid Surgery Online Quotations) Chart 1: DES Prices for Incisional & Non-Incisional + Ptosis Correction Some clinics recommended only incisional/non-incisional DES, while others gave quotes for both and left the final plan TBD after F2F consult. Zero means the clinic did not recommend the unquoted procedure. However, one thing in common is that almost all clinics recommended ptosis correction. I guess it is clear to everyone that my eyes look like they need more opening strength... Average price of incisional DES + Ptosis correction (from 5 quotations): 2.99m KRW Average price of non-incisional DES + Ptosis correction (from 7 quotations): 2.31m KRW Chart 2: Price of Epicanthoplasty Some clinics also recommended epicanthoplasty, so I took the breakdown from their quotation and charted this recommendation as well. Average price of epicanthoplasty (from 7 quotations): 0.9m KRW (Part B: Rhinoplasty Online Quotations) Chart 3: Price of Rhinoplasty I took the price quotations of all clinics, extracted the most common denominator in terms of recommended procedures (silicone bridge implant, tipplasty, using donor rib) and charted the quotations above. Obviously, some clinics have their own additional recommendations, but only the common recommendations can be analyzed in a comparable manner. The outlier here is First Button, because they went all out in their recommendations (gave 3 different options), as well as their prices (lol). Here's the breakdown: First Button Silicone bridge, donor rib Silicone bridge: 5-6k USD + 2kUSD for donated rib, Tipplasty - septal cartilage First Button Silicone bridge, own rib Silicone bridge + rib tip: 9k USD First Button Rib bridge, own rib Rib bridge + rib tip: 11k USD Average price of Rhinoplasty (from 12 quotations - excluded First Button as an outlier): 6.3m KRW (Part C - Online Consult Impressions) The following part is about my impressions after doing online consult with the clinic. Note that the online consultation requests are usually handled by staff, so their behavior and performance is not representative of the skills/attitude/professionalism of the surgeon. However, if the impression/vibe you get from online consult is too negative, it speaks volumes about the overall professionalism and service attitude of the clinic's staff, which would be an aggravating factor when it comes to choosing F2F consult targets. JT: very short and concise recommendation provided by Dr Kim. I would have preferred if the Dr gave a more detailed and personalized online consult. They have in-house translators, and provide taxi service home after the surgery Luho: online consult was concise but also covered most of the bases. Refused to answer follow up questions until F2F consult. Eight PS: gave a very detailed response to my online consult enquiry, answering my questions point by point. Recommendations felt personalized and not copy-paste. Good impression. Zestar: somewhat detailed response to follow up. Answered my online consult enquiry point-by-point. Recommendations were quite high level, with no rationale given on why specific procedures were recommended. Respect: Pretty detailed online consult. Offered treatment plan in a conversational manner, which was the just the doctor/consultant casually throwing shade on my facial features. I'm not salty but rather amused. Doc has a poor command of English, and I'm unsure if there is in-house translator. Poor online ratings, though no details why. Maybe not foreigner friendly? Grand PS: clinic ignored my online consult enquiries for a full day. Very short response with copy paste recommendations and prices. Ignored most of my other questions. ARC: very detailed online consult. Very positive attitude from the consultant as well. Doc said to be very fluent in English. Good impression. Honesty: gave a very short consult without providing rationale on the recommendations. Kept asking for my budget, which set off alarms because why else would they ask for budget if not to try and charge the maximum they can? Also offered to provide discount for writing reviews. First Button: Dr Kim gave an incredibly detailed breakdown of the recommendations and provided full rationale, risks, pros and cons, and different options. Appreciated the level of professionalism and personalization, but the prices were simply too steep for me. 345: very concise recommendations, unfortunately without rationale, just prices and procedures. Answered most of my other questions. Overall quite pleasant experience. BT: gave concise recommendations without providing much rationale. However, consultant had a very positive attitude, and provide detailed responses to all my other questions. Probably got Grace? Hear they have a Kelly and she is a nightmare to deal with. Ruby: provided a seemingly copy-paste list of procedures and prices, and tried to offer XX% discount if I paid deposit by a certain date to secure to surgery. Found several negative reviews online about their surgeon's attitude and quality of work. Thank You: copy paste and generic recommendations without much details on the rationale. Ignored most of my other questions as well. Negative reviews on Google about clinic practises. The reason why I'm so hung up on whether rationale was given and whether the recommendations feel copy-pasted is because the consultant probably didn't even speak to the doctor to get their opinion about your case, which could either mean the clinic/surgeon is too busy, or the staff can't be bothered to do a decent job after dealing with so many enquiries online. Once again though, it is not a direct reflection of a doctor's ability to deliver your desired results.
