Even though the FDA has approved its use, we should still be extremely cautious in choosing the kind of filler we inject into our bodies, for the reasons below:

1. FDA approves AND recalls a LOT of products every year. Does anyone remember phen-phen, ephedra, the first generation silicone implants? Without at least one generation worth of a trial period (15 years, generally) after a product has been on the market, it's difficult to tell what it will do to our bodies in the long run.

2. Fillers can only make your nose bigger, that's like saying that the ONLY thing a doctor does in a rhinoplasty operation is to put the implant on your nose. That's not the case at all. Nose jobs require a lot of finesse in the SHAPING and CUTTING and SUTURING of your nose's internal structures to make a more beautiful nose. For example, most Asians want their nose bridges to be thinner as well as taller. A filler can only make it taller, but it won't have any thinning effects. To think that ANY filler, even assuming that it will stay in place forever and that it is completely safe, can do the job of a traditional nose job, is wishful thinking.

3. Specifically to Artefill, the FDA ONLY approved its use for the "nasolabial folds around the mouth", which in English, is the deep wrinkles around your mouth that look like a pair of parenthesis. It is a VERY narrow approval. In fact, the FDA goes to say that it is NOT approved for "lip augmentation". We need to be really careful about what an "FDA approval" means. Ephedrine is actually FDA approved for bronchial problems, even though it has been banned by the FDA for weight loss. So, for doctors to be using Artefill for the nose would be outside of FDA's approval. (http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/mda/docs/p020012.html)




I'm an attorney that works mostly with pharmaceutical class action suits.. so I'm unusually weary of newly approved products. I'm sorry to be so long-winded about this, and I don't want to ruin anyone's dreams of a nonsurgical nose job, I just want ppl to be careful! :-d

I don't want the round asian puppy eyes look that japanese girls have.. as a matter of fact I think they're very cute looking on some, but as blunt and offensive as this may sound, i'm tired of that innocent asian girl look, like dawn yan (sp)..

what happend to grown and sexy?? The big, long and slanted eyes that give an exotic look? I think these eyes are quite sexy:

I realize that my long post sounds like a consultation with a surgeon right now but since u guys have already been through it I figgure u guys could help direct me in the right way.

Sto avoid the rounded eye if you decide to go for the double eyelid surgery, u shoudl also go with epi to elongate yoru eyes right? and i've heard of surgeons cutting yoru outter eye corners (ouch!) , sounds real extreme... are most of these cases succesful or do most end up disasterous? Anyone that coudl give me more info on the eye cutting (Double ouch!) would be much appreciated..

Why is everyone going to asia to get it done when there's a doctor in hawaii by the name of dr/ FLowers (www.flowersclinic.com) who does it just as good? I dont know if he does the magic epi but he's a little expensive.. $5140 for upper and epi.. well i booked my surgery but that might change now that i found out they may do is just as good in asia and cheaper. Btw price is not a factor i just want nice results!

So ther's oz, wish, bk (heard its bad?) and magic clinic... If i want my epi and upper lids, and my nose refined and possibly augment my bridge the most natural way possible, which one of these clinics would be most appropriate? Actually which one of these clinics have higher succesrate, and which ones have u heard bad thigns of vs good things?

* I need a dr that can speak/write english
* I need a doctor that understands me and will cater to my needs and requests cuz i do not want to wake up on the operating table with everything i told him not to do as there are spiteful doctors like that out there.
* I only have 1 week off
* I dont want too conservative changes, for that amount of money i better see CHANGES lol... but i want a good dr that has good skills and a GOOD AESTHETIC eye so he knows what fits my face and what too little vs too much is.

Kimosa: U got ur lowers done right? Did he only remove fat or skin too?Did u have a lot of fat to begin with? Besides the hollowness did the skin on the lower lids retract making ur lower eyelid pull down after surgery? This happends to some when they do the lowers because for some reason teh scarring makes the eyelid sit lower, showing more 'white' of the eyeball', which is somethign dr's try to avoid..

Nini: How are you girl? Hows ur nose and did u get ur eyes doen too? What clnic did u go to and are u happy?

Maskd: u already know i'm gonna blow u up with tons of questions.. i've read every post in this thread and i see me and u have a lot in common and i def can agree with a lot of ur comments and ur general judgement on things whic is why i trust you to help assist me..

U got ur uppers doen by Kim in GA, do u feel he really did a good job? and why did u choose him specifically? If chuang did ur epi, if u could go back in time would u have let him do ur uppers to?

Besides the healingtime, why would u not want to redo ur nosejob?
Can u choose how tight u want the epi or will the dr choose for u? did ur epi remove all skin on the inner corners or leave a little to still maintain that asian look?
Did your eyelids go down by 50% compared to the first month or did it only lower a little? I'm asking because I want a 10mm crease with an epi.

WIth the silicone in ur nose.. how long do u have to wait till u can resume ur workout routine? I know this sounds funny but i'm a real active female and a pillow fight with a sexy guy on a friday night is not unusual.. . I work out like crazy and contact sport etc etc is a part of my life.. so with a rhino can u ever get to do that in the future after ur nose is healed or do u ahve to be careful forever?

When silicone gets infected.. that's just bad luck right? If so has anyone ever had a deformed nose taking it out from the skin eroding?

I have a pretty precise idea of what I want to look like afterwards, and it does not include some random doctor prodding and poking because 'he knows best'.

With Dr. Chuang i always get the feeling that he actually CARES what you think/what you are trying to achieve. I have sent him numerous pictures of myself, girls who have noses that i want etc etc and he always gives me a very detailed description of what i could achieve and how he would go about doing that.

The reason i have to go in late June is that I will only be in Asia for six months next year and i have to wait a minimum of six months between having the muscle levator surgery and the eyelash implant surgery. Dr. Jong says he will only be able to do the second operation in December if I have the first in late June/early July.

At this stage, I am planning on doing nose, chin, muscle levator surgery for eyes, eyelash implants and hair transplant to my forehead (to make my forehead look smaller).

I'm going with Dr. Chuang for chin and nose and Dr. Jong at LR Clinic for all the rest.

But i will definetly keep you updated!! Good luck on your Korean search!

I'm a newbie who has recently done 3 procedures in Taipei and would like to share some of my experiences. Thanks to this forum and the feedback from Maskd, I took the plunge and went to Dr Jong Lih Ren of LR Clinic in Taipei for eyelash implants, medial epicanthoplasty and double eyelid revision surgery, yes, all at the same time!

While I got lucky with satisfactory results and a quick recovery, I DO NOT recommend doing all 3 OR any other combinations of multiple eye procedures at the same time, because a) it HURTS like a mother and b) your eyes would be massively swollen!!!

More details later in my 2nd post. Maskd, I've a few questions pertaining to lash implants to ask you, but first I'll reply to Beauty07’s questions.

What are the risks involved u know?
I just had eyelash implants 20 days ago with Dr Jong Lih Ren of LR Clinic in Taipei. If you have conducted some research on the internet, you would have read that one of the risks of eyelash implant surgery is blindness, though not many incidences of this have been reported to date. However, one important qualifier --this is a relatively new cosmetic procedure, so the medical research and statistics available will be limited compared to other types of cosmetic surgeries. Please bear this in mind. And just like any other medical/cosmetic surgeries, there will always be risks involved and the level of risk is dependent on a lot of factors, including the individuals' state of health,medical history, the surgeon's skill and of course, good old LUCK.

And I am sure most of you would have read that implanted lashes need frequent trimming and curling. You have to be committed to doing this for THE REST of your life. If you are not prepared to do so, you'd better not go for the lash implant procedure. Please bear in mind as well, that trimming lashes is something you have to do even when you're an old granny with shaky hands!!! I've thought about how to cope with this myself -- perhaps, I'll get a VERY SKILLED and GOOD lash extension beautician (with STEADY HANDS) to trim them for me when I get too old to do so!

Do your eyelashes look dramatically thicker and longer than before or is there only a slight difference?
The thickness of the eyelashes depends on the number of hairs implanted as lashes as well as the thickness of your own hair. Dr Jong typically implants a whopping 50 lashes on each eye.

My lashes are A LOT longer than before for sure. Since the donor site/source of the implants are from hairs on your head, it will grow, just like your hair normally does.

My family and friends have said there is a noticeable difference in the length of my lashes, but because my hair type is thin, my lashes aren't looking as thick as I'd like them to be.

As a person who has worn eyelash extensions before, I can tell you honestly, that lash extensions would give you better results IF a) your hair texture is thin/on the thin side and b) you would like CONSISTENTLY THICK lashes.

Having said that, eyelash implants look and feel more real, simply because they come from your own head of hair and are organic!!! And I lurrvve that!

People on this forum might like to know (if you don't already do) that:-
1) you can use certain lash growth products on your eyes to grow your lashes, which, for some people, are apparently effective but not for others. Effective products I have read of include Revitalash and Jan Marini's Lash conditioner (sorry, can't remember the actual name).

Products that are known to grow lashes reportedly come from a derivative of glaucoma medication. Again, please be careful -- for there are some side-effects that might come with regular usage and they are not suitable for everyone.

I have used Revitalash before, for a short period of time, but I thought I might have noticed a slight increase in the length of my lashes (I used them on my lower lashes as I was wearing extensions on my upper lashes). I stopped using it because a) I was concerned about possible side effects (long-term) and b) I did experience some mild eye irritation.

I highly recommend speaking with/emailing several cosmetic surgeons and perhaps, even eye specialists before actually going through any cosmetic eye procedures. Same with the use of lash growth products.

2) Did you know that apparently (this is according to Dr Jong only, I haven't checked with other surgeons) that you can do a 2nd eyelash implant IF you wanted thicker, fuller lashes? This is because, with each implant, some of the implanted lashes will typically be lost over a period of 6 months, with the survival rate of implanted lashes being 70%-95%. A 2nd lash implant surgery is only recommended at least after 6 months from the first surgery.

3) Not every lash implant surgeon will implant 50 lashes for each eye. Another Taipei surgeon I approached offered to do only 20-30 lashes per eye! The number of lashes implanted can range from 20-60 per eye.

4) Eyelash implants are done on the UPPER EYELID ONLY. From my research (which is by no means comprehensive), there is only one doctor I know of who does eyelash implants on BOTH the UPPER AND LOWER eyelids. This is Dr Jennifer Martinick who is based in Australia. She is mostly in Perth, but does travel to other Australian cities for hair and eyelash implant surgeries. I know she has a clinic in Sydney. However, she charges quite a lot more than Dr Jong -- an estimate of AUD$3,000 for each eye (this was when I enquired sometime in July 2007) I did not confirm if that included lower lashes nor how many lashes per lid (both upper and lower) does she implant.

Please note that she generally does not recommend lash implant surgery because of the lifelong commitment it entails.
(Remember, as with many cosmetic procedures that they came about in the first place for physical reconstructive purposes for patients disfigured in accidents.)
If anyone is interested to go to her for cosmetic reasons, I suspect she might screen you for suitability first. Still, if you can afford it and live in Australia or can easily get there, it may well be worth your while contacting Dr Martinick.

How does it feel?
It feels normal after your lids have de-swelled, except I haven't begun to trim my lashes, which are long enough to tickle my eye area in my sleep! I lurrrvvve looking like a camel *blink-blink*

How often do u have to trim ur lashes?
I believe this varies from person to person, depending on how quickly it grows. I will find out soon enough and report back.

Maskd, how often do you have to trim your lashes?

Can u see which ones are real and which ones are implanted?
Yes, because remember, your real ones will keep the same length. If you want your lashes to be longer than before, then the implanted ones would have to be kept a bit longer. However, the difference should not be that noticeable (mine isn't), especially if you have many lashes implanted on each lid.

Maskd, what is your experience to date? Some input from you would be great
Are the implants weaker than the eyelashes resulting in a wavy awkward look as opposed to a one way curl upwards?
I am not sure what you mean by weaker. They do point a little bit in different directions, which is why they need to be tidied up and curled.

How much did it cost and did u get it in the same country that u got ur epi and nose done?
Dr Jong of LR Clinic in Taipei charged me approximately AUD$1000, which I think is around 35,000 in Taiwan dollars? (Please check exchange rate. I can't recall the actual figure, as I paid a total sum for 3 procedures). The rate was about, if not the same as what Maskd paid for her lash implants I think.

Dr Jong did my epi and revision double eyelid surgery as well. It is early days yet, but from what I can see thus far, it seems like he did a good job. Yay!

Hi Girlies,

I promised I would update as soon as Dr. Chuang got back to me...Well, after much waiting the good doctor finally came through!!

He has quoted me approximately $2800 AUD for chin augmentation (with Medpor implant), $2780 for cheek implants (silicone) and $2425 for nose surgery (with goretex).

Now, I'm not totally positive i want/need the cheek implants. I'll leave it to his good judgement when he sees me in person. He has also offered me a discount if I do them all together BUT I'm not sure how much.

He says I will need to stay a minimum of seven days in Taiwan after all of this. I'm planning on being in Taipei for fourteen, so hopefully that will be plenty!


Gosh I am so excited right now i could scream!! I finally have my finances in order and it really seems like this is going to happen for me!! Ahhh!!!!!!!!!

Surpisingly expensive...about $3500 Australian...

In fact, this will be the most expensive of all of my surgical procedures! So I'm not sure it's necessarily 'cheaper' than going for a Brow Lift. Certainly less invasive....

I'm still tossing up about this one though becuase I'm not sure how long the hairs will take to grow. And, more importantly, what they will look like WHILE they are growing!?!!! I Might have to cut a fringe in the meantime to hide it (i think they call them "bangs" in America, am I right?!)

You're so right on the 'at this rate, I don't think it's quite plausible' part! I don't mean to sound impatient, but all other doctors I've consulted, have emailed back but not Dr. Chuang! Just not him.. Why? I really would like him to do it coz of two main reasons:

1. I've seen it myself his work, and find that his alarplasty scars are barely noticeable even just after 2 weeks post-op.

2. I'm dying to get eyelash implants and Dr. Jong and Dr. Chuang's are so close to each other! Its like, killing two birds with a stone! What a steal!

Then again, if I don't seem to get any attention from him.. I might go to Dr. Jung.. From the conversation with him through emails, I sort of trust his professionalism. However, that means I'll have to compromise off the eyelashes implants! Which I can't bear to..

I think that would really depend on personal healing rate and tendancy to get scars.

I didnt know my "rate" untill I got alarplasty... I still have scars and holes there (obvious) to date..
Its been more than 3 months.

He said that he will treat my scars when I go back to visit him.

Lately, dr chuang has been very slow with replies. I think he is super busy?

I'm opting for China because the prices good, I have relatives in the region, and I'm familiar with the language and customs. I've heard stories about sketchy jobs, but that's mostly from small unlicensed clinics. If you go to state hospitals or well-known private hospitals you can get great results with ridiculously cheap fees. I'm thinking about state-run Shanghai No. 9 people's hospital, which has an international reputation for plastic surgery and was one of the first in China to do plastic surgery.

Also, will/does/did anyone on this forum go to Dr. Charles Lee (based in LA, Cali) for any procedures, but specifically botox reduction of the jaw muscle. I figure that I'll try the botox first and go for jaw shaving if I don't get the results I want, but I'd like to get feedback on ppl's experiences with him. I'm thinking about going early spring (end of Feb/beginning of March). Thanks!

A few girls are interested in getting chin augmentation. I am one for sure seeing my facial lipo did nothing to slim down my face. I wondered what materials best for the chin? It is another discussion of silicon verses whatever material they use for chin implants... I've read theres different types too.. ones with wings and stuff (sounds like a sanitary towel haha) so it blends in with your jaw instead of a implant just being shoved up there haha.

I was thinking of using revitalash.. sounded great from the claims.. now reading some of the posts of long tern effects of using the stuff I bit put off now... pricey stuff too... mind you its cheap compared to surgery!!

Honestly, I really want to do botox for jaw shaping in Shanghai! But I couldn't seem to find a good and reputable place to go to in Shanghai! Do anyone of you know?

In fact, I do think that botox is a better way to shape your jawline as opposed to RF jaw reduction or shaving. The effects are as good and the risk is potentially reduced! What a good trade! Just that the effect is not permanent, but since we can go through the hardwork of applying and removing make-up every time we go out, why can't we get a touch up of botox shot every 6 mths! Afterall, with 5-8 times of botox, the effect will last longer each time, and soon be more or less permanent.

Can anyone recommend any good and reputable beauty clinic in Shanghai please??? I'm going there in 2 days! (for work actually, but I'm sure I can get the time to squeeze in a jab during lunch break!)

Just to share...

According to Dr Chuang... it seems that botox on the jaw on long term isnt good at all.
he said something about the muscles will be flat and stick to the bone....

So he said that its not recommended to do botox on the long term.

He recommends that we do it for 3-4 sessions and stop for a few years.....

Hmmm but for brow lift, is it the one where they just lift the sides? making the brow look like \ / shape?

Or can they actually lift your whole forehead area together?
