I would like to thank everyone who has contributed their experiences and knowledge in this thread! This is invaluable to someone like me who is contemplating similar DES procedures in Korea too  I have made a prelim shortlist of surgeons and asked for some online quotations. Hopefully everything turns out well before I make the trip there in about 2 to 3 months' time!

I notice that many members here come from Singapore, just like myself  May I know for those who had done ptosis correction surgery in Korea, did any of you attempt to make an insurance claim on this procedure? MOH recognises this condition as a medical condition under its surgical tables. Would undergoing the knife in another country still makes the ptosis correction procedure legit for making an medical insurance claim?

Tyvm in advance!

I think there are many steps to claiming insurance for ptosis surgery. Also, how severe is your ptosis? I think it has to be really bad---- like your eyelids have to cover 50% of your pupils and it can be do to lowered eyebrows but it has to be the eyelids themselves. Where I'm from, you also have to do preliminary testing with lights and they make you do the test with your eyelids tapes and untaped to see how much of a difference ptosis would affect your vision!

Its been about a month since being back in the US after my double eyelid surgery (partial incision) + ptosis + epi procedures. Just thought it would be a good time now to share my experience and honest opinion.

I posted earlier in January in this forum asking for advice on prices for these procedures after emailing docfinder. Initially I had also planned to do Rhino but later decided not to. In the end, I decided not to go with docfinder because I found someone to come along and look after me.

My visit to one of their recommended clinics D.A (DAPRS) also revealed the following:
1. Doc finder quoted me 4.95 mil KRW but D.A. quoted me 4 mil KRW after consultation before any bargaining ( 3mil PTOSIS double eyelid surgery +1 mil EPI)
2. I did the non -incisional method 5 years ago and thought they'd put me under the "REVISIONAL SUGERY" category ( DA adds an extra 1 mil KRW for a revision) . Please take note that a previous DES via the NON-INCISIONAL METHOD is NOT a revision (do NOT let clinics try and add extra money for this).

I only visited DAPRS and the clinic I ended up doing the procedure. I picked DAPRS because it was just a 2 minute walk from my hotel.

DAPRS
- not in a fancy building but the clinic (3 stories) is very modern, clean and new
-Katie, the english translator speaks native English
-Doctor Lee (the CEO) will do DES for a 0.5mil KRW surcharge
-Doctor Choi is their Eye Specialist
-waited a while to get to see Dr. Choi (speaks no English). He and Katie were very patient with answering questions.
-would not let you bargain further unless you tell them you are committed to having your procedure done there (i.e. no visits to other clinics and committed to paying the deposit after bargaining down)

OVERALL: DAPRS gave a very good impression and any ordinary person would have been sold and put their money down

So why did I not go ahead with DAPRS?

I have a personal recommendation from a PS surgeon in Hong Kong, who happens to be a family friend. I go back to Hong Kong every now and then for the summer. The PS surgeon recommended Dr. Ahn, whom he claims is well known in the medical community in Asia. Dr Ahn sits as a panelist for Asian symposiums and conferences on double eye lid surgery+ ptosis and has published medical journals on DES. He has also been featured and acknowledged at US plastic surgery conferences for DES.

MY DES EXPERIENCE (stayed in Seoul for 8 Nights)

The clinic I went to has been around for over 20 years and specialized ONLY in facial contouring before Doctor Ahn joined from JW about 2 years ago. Doctor Ahn was the eye specialist director along with Doctor Choi (who has been mentioned all over forums). You can easily look this up.

THE SURGERY AND CONSULTATION

I met Doctor Ahn at 9:00am who had a surgery at 9:30am but was willing to see me before my surgery booking for 11am ( I did NOT have to leave a deposit for this booking). The only downside to this clinic is that there is no English translator, only Mandarin. But that was fine with me because I'm pretty fluent in Mandarin too. He thoroughly explained what ptosis achieves with diagrams and recommended me to get the incisional method because my eyelids were a bit heavy with quite alot of skin. Ptosis reduces the distance between your eye and eyebrows by pulling the eye inwards to the socket for a deep-set look. He explained this pretty well.

After he left, the Consultant who speaks native mandarin stayed behind for another hour to answer my questions and clarify anything that was unclear. I had no idea she was Korean until after conversing with her for around an hour. The bargaining process resulted in cutting their quote down by 30%.

The surgery lasted 2 hours and I was put out for about 10 minutes. The whole procedure was painless and I only felt some gentle poking throughout. I bled more than the usual person which resulted in serious bruising. DO NOT eat ginseng chicken before the surgery!! I unfortunately had ginseng chicken the night before. The bruising and swelling was so bad in one eye that I could hardly open it. I also had a bit of blurred vision for the first day. However, after 2 days everything got better and my eyes opened fine. Because I opted for the incisional method (more invasive), the recovery period for the bruising and swelling took about 2 weeks. Bruising under my eye took 17 days or so to clear completely.

This clinic provided excellent aftercare!! They let me come back every single day while I was in Korea for laser light therapy that helps speed up the recovery from bruising and swelling. I got to see Doctor Ahn 3 times during the 6 days after my procedure. He would just pop in if he happened to be free during my laser light therapy visits and he genuinely cared about the progress of my recovery. He said I recovered very quickly considering how gruesome the bruising and swelling was on Day 0. The Korean consultant (who used to work with Dr. Ahn at JW) was also always there to greet me and make sure everything was fine during my post-surgery visits.

After stitch removal on the 6th day, they asked me to come visit them for a check-up if I ever happen to be in Korea in the future. They recommended me to get a tube of Kelo-cote cream and to apply it twice a day for a month or so. So far, there has been no scarring but just a bit of purplish red around the lower inner corner of the eye from epi. This can easily be covered with concealer.

THE RESULTS

I wished I had gone to Korea the first time round for this procedure and not done it in another country! The ptosis has tightened my eye muscles so I no longer have to open my eyes like crazy and frown with my forehead! The incisional DES has also helped create a higher crease that starts closer to the corner of my eye. Previously, this was not possible without EPI and with the non-incisional DES alone. However, Dr. Ahn did tell me completely parallel eyelids would look unnatural on me and was not achievable given the structure of my eye.

PICTURES

I have compiled my recovery pictures with dates but would not like to post them publicly here. Please private message me with your kakao/line/email or whatever and I'll be happy to send them over. If you can't PM, please leave your contact details on this forum and I'll send over my pictures. My eyes have not completely settled because it has only been about 30 days but it will give you a good idea of what to expect if you were to go for the procedures I had.

Because quite a number of you people been PM-ing me about not being able to find Dr. Ahn online, I would like to clarify that he USED TO work at JW as the eye specialist director with Dr Choi but has left since 2012. He now works at a clinic that specializes in facial contouring and is the only doctor that does eye surgeries there. His full name is Ahn Tae Joo for those who asked.

Hi,

Did you also do double eyelid surgery at teuims?

I also did epi not long ago and I am 2 weeks post-op now. I am wondering if you have such symptoms during your 2 weeks mark? For me now my epi area is slightly red and I am worried that scarring will occur too :/ I hope your situation will improve soon!

NO, i only did epi tho, not really its getting worse during the third week and i sent email to teuim they replied me
"

You don't have to be serious.

It is not infection, just temporary hypertropic wound activity.

The hypertropic tendency depend on each skin type and most active 3-4 weeks postoperatively( now you are in that time)

It is not permanent,.

As time goes by, it will reduce and recover spontaneously.

If you want faster reduction of hypertropic activity, Triamcinolone injection at local clinicwould be helpful.

we wish you get better soon

Thank you.

"
I don't quite get what they meant by hyper tropic activity, and its not permanent , i am afraid it is going to be hypertropic or keloid scar. i better contact my local dermatologist. BUT i live in Canada, it is so difficult to book an appointment right away....i am SO worried.\

Btw dream17, do you mind share your picture?

Thanks

Oooh his reply is quite comforting. I went to Google "hypertrophic scar" and it seems that it is not the same as keloid and is less serious plus it is only temporary.
Maybe you could wait a few more weeks? Hopefully it can recover by itself. *fingers crossed*

Don't think I will be uploading pics here as I am not very comfortable putting my photo online, but for now my epi area is a little red. And I can see some small lines of the epi incision and these lines only begin to appear few days ago :/

For people who have done eyelid surgery, anyone experience excess skin drooping over your eyelid shortly after surgery? Wonder if this is temporary? I am currently 2 weeks post-op.
